"Thanks for your support"

an email from one of Mark's mentoring candidates

"I just wanted to drop you a brief e-mail to let you know how useful the mentoring sessions have been in progressing my development towards partnership.

One of the best tributes I can pay to the sessions, and your input to my development, is to say that I would recommend you to friends and colleagues trying to achieve their goals, and indeed that I have recommended you to another person.

The sessions have been invaluable in allowing me to have an independent sounding board outside of my own firm, who has been there and done it and is able to give me the benefit of their experience and to ensure that I can understand what is required to develop into a partnership role and am able to achieve that goal.

The analogies and tools that you have provided me with during the course of our sessions have enabled me to understand and manage the expectations of others and also to help them achieve their goals, which will ensure that ultimately I achieve mine.

I believe that the sessions have significantly affected my approach at work in a positive manner and a testament to this is the positive statements of other staff members and partners during our annual 360 degree review process.

Finally, I have no doubt that we will be in touch in the future to continue my own or my team's development.

Thanks and regards"

Do any of the following sound familiar?

"He's good at his job, but lacks the personal and management skills to progress further."

"I need a credible independent senior professional to challenge me to be more effective in my management role."

"I wish we had the time to spend with him so that we could help him be more effective in all aspects of his role."

Most people would agree that we can all achieve better levels of professional success with the guidance and help of a mentor; someone with whom we can discuss our career plans, evaluate options and ac hievements, and work through issues.

Key managers often have many key skills but these may require honing or enhancing before promotion to partnership can be assured. There may be someone suitable in your firm who is prepared to free up enough time to act as a mentor. Alternatively you may prefer to evidence your commitment to the managers’ future by engaging Mark Lee to act as their mentor and business coach. Imagine the positive impact this is likely to have on their confidence.

How Mark Lee can help

Mark is able to accept a limited number of assignments to mentor partners and rising stars in professional firms. Mark acts as a confidential helper and guide, to stimulate professional development and to help make it more effective.

The relationship is personal and confidential. Mark will challenge and support those he works with, but will not tell them what to do.

Mark's aim is to ensure that those he works with gain in confidence and independence as a result of mentoring, and that they are better able to take full and effective responsibility for their own development over the next career stage.

The next page identifies the benefits of Mentoring both from the firm's perspective and that of the person being mentored.
